Our Story

The journey of Mafina B.V. - From visionary beginnings to global energy solutions leader

A Long Way in a Short Time

Founded in 1953, MAFINA began its energy storage operations with four terminals. Modest in capacity but bold in vision, we set out to create a different kind of energy storage business.

2006

Humble Beginnings

Established with four terminals in the Netherlands, focusing on petroleum storage with a commitment to operational excellence.

Our Driving Passion

From day one, we've operated with a clear vision: to set up a different kind of energy storage business. To do things differently. To think like our customers. Like true entrepreneurs.

This passion drives our continuous innovation in terminal operations, safety standards, and sustainable energy solutions. We're not just storing energy - we're shaping the future of global energy infrastructure.

Mafina Bio-Energy Tilburg

Mafina is developing a bioenergy facility for the processing of organic waste streams. The facility will produce approximately 23 million m3 of biogas per year. Part of this biogas is upgraded to green gas for the Dutch gas grid. For example, this green gas can provide for the annual gas consumption of approximately 2,700 households and plays an important role in making the Netherlands more sustainable. The climate agreement obliges the Netherlands to produce 2 billion m3 of green gas by 2030.

Mafina Bio-Energy Limburg

Mafina is exploring the possibility of developing a bioenergy plant for the production of green gas and organic fertilizer pellets at zevenellen business park, in Leudal. We are investigating the possibility of realizing a modern facility that brings green energy and circularity together on this multifunctional and sustainable business park. By processing organic residual streams, biogas is produced, which is processed into green gas and injected into the Dutch gas grid.

Zeeland Energy Terminal (ZET)

Mafina and Hoegh LNG are investigating the possibility of developing the Zeeland Energy Terminal. The terminal consists of a so-called Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU vessel) and related infrastructure. This means that there will be a special vessel on the water where liquefied natural gas (LNG) will be temporarily stored and then regasified. This vessel will be permanently moored to a jetty and connected to pipelines to bring the natural gas ashore. The intended location of the terminal is near Vlissingen, Zeeland.

Mafina Glentham Green Energy

Mafina has started construction on its first bio-energy production plant in the UK in Licolnshire. The plant, part of the Glentham Green Energy (GGE) project, will produce 60 GWh of renewable natural gas annually, enough to heat over 5,200 homes. The plant will process organic waste streams from agriculture, such as straw, chicken manure and potato waste, and inject the upgraded green gas into the National Gas Transmission network.

Amplifhy Antwerp

Hydrogen will play a crucial role in the future energy mix. Hydrogen is versatile, can store and transport renewable intermittent energy from sources such as solar and wind over distance and time can be produced from the cleanest renewable resources such as solar and wind and has the potential to decarbonize even hard-to-abate sectors. A mix of local hydrogen production and hydrogen imports from a diversified portfolio of countries around the globe will enable Europe to make the transition to a clean and secure energy economy.
